Update Hosts File

This lets you view a site that hasn't been published publicly


If you’re computer runs Windows, follow the instructions below:

  • Press the Windows key.
  • Type Notepad in the search field.
  • In the search results, right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
  • In Notepad, click File > Open
  • Change the File Type in the bottom right corner to All Files instead of Txt Files
  • Open the following file: c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
  • Scroll to the bottom of the file and type the IP address we gave you (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
  • Press Tab
  • Type the address we gave you (staging.whatever.com)
  • Click File > Save to save your changes.
  • Close Notepad

Mac OS

If you’re running on MAC OSx follow the steps below:

  • Press Command & Space
  • Type Terminal
  • Press Enter
  • Type sudo nano /etc/hosts
  • Press Enter
  • Type the password you use to log into your machine
  • Press Enter
  • Scroll to the bottom of the file
  • Type the IP address we gave you (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
  • Press TAB
  • Type the web address we gave you (staging.whatever.com)
  • Press Ctrl & X
  • Press Y to save
  • Press Enter


Just call it a day and go home.
